Mount Merapi (Gunung Merapi) is a highly active stratovolcano in Java, Indonesia, about an hour’s drive north of the city of Yogyakarta. It is one of the country’s most active volcanoes and one of the most visited, because its lower southern slopes can be explored by jeep while the summit stays closed. This guide answers what most visitors want to know: where it is, how active it is right now, what you can and cannot do, and how to see it safely.

Merapi is not Marapi, a volcano in West Sumatra. The two names cause confusion in news headlines; see Mount Merapi vs Marapi.
Merapi has been at Alert Level III (Siaga) since November 2020. The monitoring centre BPPTKG still reported Level III in its update of 7 October 2026, and we found no report of a change on 12 October. Early-October reports describe frequent rockfall earthquakes, lava avalanches of up to about 2.5 km and pyroclastic flows into river valleys such as the Boyong, with danger distances of several kilometres from the peak. Level III is the second-highest level of four: it does not mean an eruption is under way, but it does mean the volcano is not at rest.
This is a snapshot, not a forecast. Check BPPTKG or MAGMA Indonesia before you travel. Our plain-English explainer is Mount Merapi alert level, and the visitor view is in is Mount Merapi safe to visit.
No. Summit climbing is officially prohibited, with a restricted zone of about 3 km around the crater (backindo.com, updated 1 August 2026). Official hiking access first closed in May 2018. Companies that still advertise summit hikes are operating against that rule, which can affect insurance and emergency help. Read Merapi volcano hike guide for the full answer and the alternatives.
The standard way to see Merapi is an open 4×4 jeep tour on the lower southern slope. It stays outside the restricted zone and takes you through the landscape of the 2010 eruption. Stops vary by route and by day, but typically include:
Routes run from 1.5 hours to about 3.5 hours. Our reference prices are per jeep (up to 4 guests): short IDR 500,000, classic IDR 600,000, long IDR 750,000 and sunrise IDR 700,000, all to be confirmed by the operator. Compare every option on the Merapi tour packages page, or go straight to the sunrise jeep tour for the best chance of a clear view. If you want temples on the same trip, see the Borobudur, Merapi and Prambanan day tour. Details of pick-up and timing are on Merapi volcano tour from Yogyakarta.
The eruption that began on 26 October 2010 is described as Merapi’s largest since 1872 (VEI 4). Pyroclastic flows travelled up to about 14.5 km, over 350,000 people were evacuated, and the death toll is given as roughly 350 to 390 depending on the source (Wikipedia gives 386). Much of what visitors see today, from the museum to the boulders along the tracks, is a legacy of that event. Read the full account in Mount Merapi 2010 eruption, and treat the sites as memorials: ask before photographing people and follow your driver-guide’s directions.
Mornings are usually clearest and cloud builds as the day warms. The dry season (roughly May to October) gives better odds than the wet season, but nothing is guaranteed. Our guides: Mount Merapi visibility and weather and can you see Mount Merapi from Yogyakarta.
Merapi sits within Javanese belief and royal tradition. Its spiritual gatekeeper, Mbah Marijan, lived on the southern slope and died in the 2010 eruption; see Mount Merapi mythology and Mbah Marijan. The neighbouring volcano Merbabu is higher, at about 3,145 m: read Mount Merapi and Merbabu. If you are comparing volcanoes in the region, see volcano near Yogyakarta. Yes. It has been at Alert Level III (Siaga) since November 2020. Lava avalanches and small pyroclastic flows were reported in early October 2026.
Jeep tours run on the lower slopes outside the restricted zone and can be changed or postponed if activity or weather requires it. We cannot call any volcano visit risk-free; check the latest status before you go.
The 2010 eruption was the largest since 1872. Smaller eruptions have continued since.
