Alien Rock (Batu Alien): The Boulder Carried Down by Merapi

Alien Rock, known in Indonesian as Batu Alien, is one of the best-known photo stops on a Merapi jeep tour, and the answer to most searches for alien rock merapi. It is a very large boulder in the Cangkringan area of Sleman, carried down the slope by the 2010 lava and debris flow and left standing where it stopped. Its rounded shape is often described as head-like, which is where the nickname comes from. We found its origin story only in search results, so we describe it cautiously here.

What it is

Alien Rock is a geological feature rather than a built monument. It shows what the 2010 eruption could move: a boulder of this size was transported down from the upper slope by the flow. The rock stands beside the track, so the jeep stops, you climb down and take photos next to it to get a sense of scale. A short stop is usually enough.

Why it matters on the tour

Together with Museum Sisa Hartaku and the lava tracks, Alien Rock is one of the stops that explains the 2010 eruption without needing a long talk. The eruption began on 26 October 2010 and was the largest since 1872; read the background in Mount Merapi 2010 eruption. Having a physical reference for how far material travelled makes the later stops, such as the wet river crossing at Kali Kuning, easier to understand.

Tips for the photo stop

  • Pose for scale. Stand beside the boulder rather than in front of it.
  • Go early. Morning light is softer, and you avoid the hottest hours.
  • Watch your step. The ground around the rock is uneven.
  • Keep to the track. Stay with your group and follow your driver-guide.
  • Respect the landscape. Do not climb or mark the rock. The area is part of a community that was affected by the eruption.

Status and safety
