This Borobudur Merapi jeep Prambanan itinerary is the long version of a Yogyakarta day: two UNESCO temples and a volcano in a single day. You see Borobudur at sunrise, take an open 4×4 across the lava tracks of Mount Merapi, and finish at Prambanan. It suits travellers with one day to spare and a lot of energy. If you prefer a shorter day, the Borobudur sunrise and Merapi half day skips Prambanan.

The day at a glance

Borobudur is roughly 1 to 1.5 hours by car from Yogyakarta, Merapi about an hour in the other direction, and Prambanan roughly 30 to 40 minutes from the city. A day like this is a lot of driving, so a private car is the practical choice. See Yogyakarta to Borobudur distance.

Borobudur at sunrise: two choices

“Sunrise at Borobudur” means one of two things:

• Punthuk Setumbu: a hill viewpoint about 2 km from the temple. A traveller guide updated March 2026 reports about IDR 50,000 for foreigners. You watch the sun rise over the valley, with Merapi on the horizon if the weather allows, but you are not inside the temple.
• Sunrise on the temple (Manohara experience): reported at about IDR 1,000,000 for foreigners, with a daily quota of around 100 visitors.

Price and tickets

The tour price is on request. Temple entry is the main swing factor between offers, so we will itemise it for you rather than guess. For orientation only: a marketplace listing for a private 12-hour version showed a price of IDR 2,277,000 per person with tickets included, and another feed showed USD 50 from, per person. Those are other operators’ prices, not ours.

Practical notes

• Mondays: one guide says Prambanan is only partly open on Mondays, and Borobudur’s temple structure may also have Monday restrictions. Avoid Monday if you can, and check the official sites.
• Dress: shoulders and knees covered for the temples, a sarong is usually provided. Upanat shoes are mandatory on the Borobudur structure.
• Heat: temple courtyards are hot at midday, so the early start helps.
• Pace: expect a full day. If it feels too much, drop Prambanan and take the half-day option.

Volcano status and safety

Mount Merapi has been at Alert Level III (Siaga) since November 2020. Status checked 12 October 2026; BPPTKG still reported Level III on 7 October. The summit is closed, with a restricted zone of about 3 km. The jeep ride stays on the lower slopes and can be changed or postponed if activity or weather requires it.
