Mbah Marijan's House: The Memorial of Merapi's Gatekeeper

The former home of Mbah Marijan (also spelled Maridjan) in Kinahrejo, Cangkringan, is now a memorial. The Mbah Marijan house is the stop that sets the long Merapi jeep routes apart from the shorter ones, and the reason many guests choose them. Local listings call it the petilasan, a place of remembrance. This page explains who he was, what you see and how to visit with respect.

Who was Mbah Marijan?

Mbah Marijan was the juru kunci, or spiritual gatekeeper, of Mount Merapi, a role appointed by the Sultan’s palace in Yogyakarta. He lived in Kinahrejo village on the southern slope, roughly 4 to 5 km from the summit according to different sources. He declined to evacuate when the 2010 eruption began and died when a pyroclastic flow struck his home at the start of the sequence, together with several others. The exact date is given as 26 or 27 October 2010 depending on the source. His story is told in more depth in Mount Merapi mythology and Mbah Marijan, and the wider event in Mount Merapi 2010 eruption.

What you see

The site is a modest memorial rather than a museum. It is the former home turned memorial, in a village that was heavily affected by the eruption. A listing from Headout names it on longer jeep tracks. Another operator guide adds a stop at the grave and Glagahsari Hill as a long-trip extra. Your driver-guide will explain what remains and what the site means to local people, and many guides have personal connections to the mountain. Details of the layout and opening times are something we have not verified, so we confirm them when you book.

Which routes include it

Operator research from October 2026 shows the memorial on the medium and long routes, and our long route is built around it.

Route Time on the mountain Reference price per jeep
Long route with Mbah Marijan 3-3.5 hours IDR 750,000
Classic (medium) 2-2.5 hours IDR 600,000

Prices are reference prices, per jeep (up to 4 guests), to be confirmed by the operator. Some operators list a donation at the site; ask your driver-guide, and we will confirm whether one is expected. The long route’s extra cost is mostly this stop and the extra time. 3. Follow your driver-guide’s directions.
  4. Keep your voice low and dress modestly.
  5. Consider a small donation if the site invites one.
