Borobudur Sunrise and Merapi Lava Tour: A Half Day

Mount Merapi and Borobudur together make a natural pair. Many visitors want both of Central Java’s headline sights, a great temple and an active volcano, but cannot spare a 12-hour day. This half-day combination puts them together. You wake early for sunrise at Borobudur, then continue to the southern slope of Mount Merapi, climb into an open 4×4 and finish by lunch time. How the morning works

Borobudur is roughly 1 to 1.5 hours from Yogyakarta by car, and Merapi about an hour from the city. The tour is planned to keep driving time sensible, but the exact order and timing will be confirmed when you book. Distances are explained in Yogyakarta to Borobudur distance.

Borobudur sunrise: Setumbu or the temple?

Setumbu is a hilltop viewpoint about 2 km from the temple, with a reported foreigner entry of about IDR 50,000 (traveller guide, March 2026). From there, Merapi can be seen on the horizon if the weather allows. The Manohara sunrise on the temple itself is reported at about IDR 1,000,000, with a quota of around 100 visitors a day. The Merapi part

After the temple you switch to an open 4×4 on the lower slopes of the volcano in the Cangkringan area. Typical stops are:

• Museum Sisa Hartaku, with belongings left by the 2010 eruption.
• Alien Rock, a boulder carried down by the 2010 flow.
• Kaliadem Bunker, a refuge bunker on the slope.
• The Kali Kuning river crossing on some routes. You can get wet.

By late morning cloud often covers the summit, so you may see less of the peak than on an early jeep tour. The lava tracks and eruption sites are still worth the ride. Prefer the best volcano view? Price

The combination is priced on request, because the operator has not yet fixed it and the temple tickets change the total. For context, a Merapi jeep alone has reference prices of IDR 500,000-750,000 per jeep (up to 4 guests) on our tours page. We will give you a full quote, with the tickets listed, before you commit.

Volcano status and safety

Mount Merapi has been at Alert Level III (Siaga) since November 2020. Status checked 12 October 2026; BPPTKG still reported Level III on 7 October. The summit is closed, with a restricted zone of about 3 km. The jeep ride stays on the lower slopes and can be changed or postponed if activity or weather requires it.
