The Merapi sunrise jeep tour is the best-known way to see the volcano at its clearest. You leave Yogyakarta in the dark, climb into an open 4×4 at the base of the southern slope and watch the first light reach the mountain from the Kaliadem Bunker area. Then you drive through the landscape left by the 2010 eruption. If you only have time for one Merapi trip and want the best chance of a clear view, this is the one.

Why go at sunrise

Merapi is usually at its clearest at dawn. Cloud tends to build through the morning, and in the afternoon rain is more likely, even in the dry season. That is why most jeep tours start before 10:00 and why sunrise is the favourite slot. It is also cooler and quieter on the tracks. The dry season (roughly May to October) gives better odds than the wet season.

Sunrise packages from other local operators usually combine the sunrise view with the bunker, Alien Rock, the mini museum and a river track. The wet crossing is not available on every sunrise option, so ask us whether it is running on your day.

Price: what you pay and what to check

The reference price is IDR 700,000 per jeep, not per person. Split between two guests that is IDR 350,000 each (about USD 20); with four guests it is IDR 175,000 each (about USD 10). For comparison, local operators listed sunrise trips between IDR 500,000 and IDR 700,000 per jeep in October 2026. Our figure is meant to be all-in, covering hotel pick-up, insurance and helmets, but those inclusions are to be confirmed.

What to bring

• A light jacket for the cool, early air.
• Closed shoes and clothes you do not mind getting dusty or wet.
• A change of clothes if the river crossing is on your route.
• Sunglasses or a scarf for dust on the tracks.
• Your camera. A phone is fine, but keep it dry near the water.

Volcano status and safety

Mount Merapi has been at Alert Level III (Siaga) since November 2020. Status checked 12 October 2026; the monitoring centre BPPTKG still reported Level III on 7 October. The summit is closed, with a restricted zone of about 3 km. Jeep tours stay on the lower slopes. A tour can be changed or postponed if activity or weather requires it.
