Museum Sisa Hartaku: The 2010 Merapi Eruption Museum

Museum Sisa Hartaku, often called the Mini Museum on tour listings, is a small museum in the Kepuharjo and Cangkringan area of Sleman. It displays items left behind after Mount Merapi’s 2010 eruption, including burnt belongings. “Sisa hartaku” is Indonesian for roughly “what remains of my belongings”, which sums up the exhibits. It is the Mount Merapi museum most visitors mean, and one of the most common stops on a Merapi jeep tour.

What you see

The collection consists of everyday objects and artefacts that survived or were damaged by the heat and ash of the eruption. It is a modest museum rather than a large institution, so most visitors spend a short time there, but it explains the scale of what happened better than the landscape alone. The 2010 eruption was the largest since 1872 and displaced over 350,000 people; the museum puts a human scale on those figures. Our summary of the event is in Mount Merapi 2010 eruption.

Which jeep tours stop here

Operator research from October 2026 shows the museum on the short, medium, long and sunrise routes, which makes it the most widely included stop on the mountain. Entry is usually bundled in the jeep price (one operator listing, Headout, states entrance tickets are included).

Route Time on the mountain Reference price per jeep
Short 1.5-2 hours IDR 500,000
Classic (medium) 2-2.5 hours IDR 600,000
Long 3-3.5 hours IDR 750,000
Sunrise About 3 hours IDR 700,000

Prices are reference prices, per jeep (up to 4 guests), and inclusions are to be confirmed by the operator. For the arithmetic of per-jeep pricing, see Merapi jeep tour cost. All routes are compared on the tour packages page.

Visiting respectfully

The museum is a memorial as well as an attraction. Many people lost relatives or homes in 2010, and residents still live in the area.

  1. Ask before photographing people.
  2. Keep your voice down inside the exhibits.
  3. Follow your driver-guide, who may share personal stories.
  4. Consider a small donation if invited; ask your driver-guide.

The same attitude applies at Mbah Marijan’s house, the memorial of Merapi’s spiritual gatekeeper. His story is told in Mount Merapi mythology and Mbah Marijan.

Combine it with other stops

Museum Sisa Hartaku sits close to the other sites on the lower southern slope: Alien Rock, Kaliadem Bunker and the Kali Kuning crossing. On a sunrise tour the museum usually comes after the bunker, at about 07:00 (to be confirmed). See the sunrise jeep tour for the timeline.

Status and safety

Mount Merapi has been at Alert Level III (Siaga) since November 2020. Status checked 12 October 2026; BPPTKG still reported Level III on 7 October. The summit is closed. Jeep tours stay on the lower slopes, and a trip can be changed or postponed if activity or weather requires it. Opening hours of the museum are not something we have verified, so we confirm them when you book. More on the volcano: Mount Merapi guide.
