How pricing works: jeep tours are priced per jeep, not per person. One open 4×4 takes up to 4 guests, so a couple pays the same as a group of four. All prices below are reference prices in IDR, to be confirmed by the operator, and USD figures are approximate (about IDR 17,900 per USD).

Merapi lava jeep routes at a glance

Market prices for comparable per-jeep routes were IDR 400,000-750,000 when we checked in October 2026. Our reference prices are meant to be all-in: hotel pick-up in Yogyakarta, insurance and helmets. The exact inclusions are to be confirmed.

What is on each route

All jeep routes run on the lower southern slope in the Cangkringan area of Sleman, through the landscape left by the 2010 eruption. Stops vary by route and by day.

• Short: Museum Sisa Hartaku, Alien Rock and the lava river tracks. See the museum and Alien Rock pages.

• Long: adds the memorial at Mbah Marijan’s house in Kinahrejo.
• Wet river crossing: the Kali Kuning crossing is the finale on some routes. You can get wet, so bring spare clothes. It is not part of every sunrise option. Details on the Kali Kuning page.

Which Merapi tour should you choose?

• One morning, limited time: the short or classic route. If you can only pick one, the classic route covers the main stops.
• You want the view: go at sunrise. Mornings are usually clearer and cloud builds as the day warms up. Read our visibility and weather guide.
• You care about the story: choose the long route, which adds the Mbah Marijan memorial.
• Family or friends who want flexibility: the private tour lets you set the pace.

Volcano status and safety

Mount Merapi has been at Alert Level III (Siaga) since November 2020. We checked on 12 October 2026, and the volcano monitoring centre BPPTKG still reported Level III in its update of 7 October. The summit is closed, with a restricted zone of about 3 km. Jeep tours stay on the lower slopes, and a trip can be changed or postponed if activity or weather requires it.
