Merapi Volcano Tour from Yogyakarta: How the Day Works

A Merapi volcano tour from Yogyakarta takes you north from the city to the southern slope of Mount Merapi, usually in an open 4×4 jeep. You do not climb the volcano, because the summit is closed. How far is Merapi from Yogyakarta?

Mount Merapi lies north of Yogyakarta, on the border of the Special Region of Yogyakarta and Central Java. A route planner puts it at about 58 km and a little over an hour by car to a map point labelled “Mount Merapi”. Jeep operators start on the southern slope in Sleman, in the Cangkringan area (Kepuharjo, Kinahrejo and Kaliadem). Hotel pick-up in Yogyakarta is planned for every tour, but the pick-up area and times are to be confirmed with the operator. Tell us the name or area of your hotel when you message us and we will confirm the time. Hotels near Kaliurang or Pakem are closer to the slope. Hotels near the airport or south of the city need extra time.

When is the best time to go?

Early morning. Merapi is usually clearest at dawn and cloud builds through the morning, so most jeep tours start before 10:00. The dry season (roughly May to October) generally gives better odds than the wet season. Nothing is guaranteed: a cloudy morning can hide the summit, but you still see the lava tracks and the eruption sites. Volcano status and safety

Mount Merapi has been at Alert Level III (Siaga) since November 2020. Status checked 12 October 2026; BPPTKG still reported Level III on 7 October. The summit is closed, with a restricted zone of about 3 km. Jeep tours stay on the lower slopes, and a trip can be changed or postponed if activity or weather requires it.
