A private Merapi jeep tour is the version where the day is built around you. Instead of fitting a fixed route, you decide how long to stay at each stop, whether to add the wet river crossing, and when to take a break. It suits families, photographers, small groups of friends and anyone who prefers not to rush.

What “private” means here

Private means the jeep and the driver are for your group only. Comparable private Merapi 4WD offers from marketplaces describe a roughly 4-hour tour with an English-speaking driver, water, entry fees and hotel pick-up within Yogyakarta. We aim for the same standard, but each point below is to be confirmed by the operator:

• Own car and an English-speaking driver-guide for the transfer.
• A 4×4 jeep on the Kaliadem and Cangkringan tracks.
• Hotel pick-up and drop-off in Yogyakarta.
• Water and entry tickets for the stops you choose.
• A route you can adjust on the day.

Because the whole vehicle is yours, this is also the tour where we can tailor the start time. Early starts follow the same logic as our sunrise jeep tour: mornings are usually clearer.

Shared jeep or private tour?

A typical private route

Stops depend on the day, your wishes and any restrictions set by the authorities. A common sequence on the lower southern slope looks like this:

1. Hotel pick-up in Yogyakarta and the drive north, roughly an hour.
2. Kaliadem Bunker, the refuge bunker and a sunrise viewpoint.
3. Museum Sisa Hartaku with belongings left by the 2010 eruption.
4. Alien Rock, the boulder carried down by the 2010 flow.
5. Optional wet crossing at Kali Kuning. Bring spare clothes.
6. Optional memorial stop at Mbah Marijan’s house.
7. Return to your hotel.

Add Borobudur or Prambanan

If you want temples as well, ask for a private combination. The Borobudur sunrise and Merapi tour is a half day, and the Borobudur, Merapi and Prambanan day tour runs 12 hours. Both are priced on request.

Volcano status and safety

Mount Merapi has been at Alert Level III (Siaga) since November 2020. Status checked 12 October 2026; BPPTKG still reported Level III on 7 October. The summit is closed, with a restricted zone of about 3 km. Private tours stay on the lower slopes too, and a trip can be changed or postponed if activity or weather requires it.
