Kaliadem Bunker: Refuge Bunker and Sunrise Viewpoint on Merapi
Kaliadem Bunker, the best-known Mount Merapi bunker, is a refuge bunker on the southern slope of Mount Merapi, in the Kepuharjo area of Sleman, north of Yogyakarta. For most visitors it is the place where a Merapi jeep tour feels real: an open view up the slope towards the volcano, with the landscape of the 2010 eruption around you. On sunrise tours it is the viewpoint where first light is watched.
What Kaliadem Bunker is
The bunker is a shelter built into the slope as a refuge. Search results describe it as built before 2006, but we only found that detail in a search snippet, so we do not rely on it here. What matters for visitors is what you see today: a historic site on the lower slope, set against a wide view of the mountain. It is one of the stops where your driver-guide will usually pause for photos and explanations.
Because Kaliadem sits on the lower slope, it lies outside the 3 km restricted zone around the summit. You do not climb anywhere to reach it: the jeep drives you there.
Why it is the sunrise stop
On the Merapi sunrise jeep tour, the plan is to reach the bunker area at about 05:30-06:00 (to be confirmed) for first light on the volcano. The view depends on the weather. Merapi is usually clearest at dawn, and cloud builds through the morning, so an early slot gives the best odds. No operator can promise a clear summit. See our visibility and weather guide.
Which routes include it
According to operator research from October 2026, the bunker is on the medium, long and sunrise routes. It is not part of the short route on every operator’s list, so ask us if it matters to you.
| Route | Reference price per jeep | Bunker included? |
|---|---|---|
| Short | IDR 500,000 | Ask us |
| Classic (medium) | IDR 600,000 | Yes, typically |
| Long | IDR 750,000 | Yes, typically |
| Sunrise | IDR 700,000 | Yes, as the viewpoint |
Prices are reference prices, per jeep (up to 4 guests), to be confirmed by the operator. Entry to the bunker is usually bundled into the jeep price at the operators we reviewed; we will confirm what is included in your quote. See all routes on the Merapi tour packages page.
What to bring and how to behave
- A light jacket if you are going at dawn. It is cooler on the slope.
- Closed shoes, because tracks are dusty and uneven.
- Respect for the site. The area was affected by the 2010 eruption, and people live and work nearby. Read the background in Mount Merapi 2010 eruption.
- Your driver-guide’s directions. Stay with the group and keep to the marked tracks.
Nearby stops on the same tour
- Museum Sisa Hartaku, with belongings left by the 2010 eruption.
- Alien Rock, a boulder carried down by the 2010 flow.
- Kali Kuning, a wet river crossing on some routes.
- Mbah Marijan’s house, a memorial on the long route.
For the volcano itself, see the Mount Merapi guide.
Status and safety
Mount Merapi has been at Alert Level III (Siaga) since November 2020. Status checked 12 October 2026; BPPTKG still reported Level III on 7 October. Jeep tours stay on the lower slopes, and a trip can be changed or postponed if activity or weather requires it. Stops can also be closed at short notice. Ask us what is open on your date, and read is it worth it if you are choosing a route length.
