Merapi Jeep Tour Cost 2026: Per Jeep, Per Person, Total

  • October 14, 2026

The merapi jeep tour cost in October 2026 is roughly IDR 400,000 to IDR 750,000 per jeep, and one jeep carries up to four adults. At about IDR 17,930 per USD (Bank Indonesia’s JISDOR rate on 13 October 2026) that is USD 22 to USD 42 for the whole vehicle, not for each person. Most of the confusion around the merapi jeep tour cost comes from prices quoted per person, per “pax” or per ticket for the same jeep. This guide shows the real ranges by route, how to read the label, what the headline price leaves out, and what one morning costs under four different ways of paying.

Merapi jeep tour cost by route length

The merapi jeep tour cost depends first on route length. Local operators sell three lengths plus a sunrise trip. The ranges below come from our October 2026 survey of local operator sites and a Telkomsel travel guide. Prices are per jeep for up to four adults.

Route Time on the slopes Market range per jeep Approx. USD Visit Merapi reference, all-in
Short 1.5 to 2 hours IDR 400,000 to 450,000 22 to 25 IDR 500,000 (about USD 28)
Medium 2 to 2.5 hours IDR 500,000 to 600,000 28 to 33 IDR 600,000 (about USD 33)
Long 3 to 3.5 hours IDR 600,000 to 750,000 33 to 42 IDR 750,000 (about USD 42)
Sunrise about 3 hours, starts 04:00 to 04:30 IDR 500,000 to 700,000 28 to 39 IDR 700,000 (about USD 39)

The reference column is our own planning price, still to be confirmed with the operator, and it includes hotel pickup in Yogyakarta, insurance, helmets and tickets. The market column is what local operators publish per jeep. What it includes varies: some list insurance and hotel transfer, others charge pickup extra, and attraction tickets are often paid on site. That is why the two columns are not a like-for-like comparison. Route details are on the Merapi tour packages page, and the early start is covered in the sunrise jeep tour.

Per jeep or per person: how to read the price

A typical product page for a medium route reads “From IDR 550K per PAX”. The same page says “Purchase of 1 Pax = 1 Jeep” and “The maximum number of passengers in 1 Jeep is 4 people” (Wonderful Borobudur Tours). So a “pax” there is the whole jeep. Other platforms do not state the unit in the search snippet at all:

  • Klook shows a short-route ticket at USD 22.25. That equals about IDR 399,000, which sits inside the per-jeep range for the short route, so it may be a per-jeep price. The snippet does not say, so confirm before paying.
  • Traveloka starts at USD 22.92 and tiket.com lists IDR 530,000 for medium and sunrise and IDR 630,000 for long. Units are not stated in the snippets either.
  • Pelago prices per person and by group size: USD 17.29 each for four or more, USD 18.60 for three, USD 26.11 for two. That listing is a 90-minute jeep ride with hotel transfers.

If the merapi jeep tour cost is IDR 600,000 for the jeep, the per-person maths is simple:

Group size Per person Approx. USD per person
1 traveller IDR 600,000 33
2 travellers IDR 300,000 17
3 travellers IDR 200,000 11
4 travellers IDR 150,000 8

The first question for any provider is therefore: “Is this price per jeep or per person, and how many people does it cover?”

What the headline price often leaves out

Two quotes with the same headline price can differ by IDR 100,000 or more once extras appear. Check these:

  • Getting to the jeep. The Wonderful Borobudur Tours listing excludes transport to and from the jeep basecamp in Cangkringan, Sleman. Hotel transfer from Yogyakarta is a separate cost unless the operator includes it. We found no published price for that ride, so ask.
  • Hotel pickup. One local operator lists pickup as an extra without itemising it. Another includes it.
  • Optional attraction tickets. Some operators collect IDR 15,000 for Stonehenge Merapi and IDR 30,000 for Lost World Castle on site.
  • Small fees and food. One site lists a IDR 5,000 per person conservation fee and IDR 25,000 to 40,000 for a sunrise breakfast. We saw this on only one site, so treat it as something to ask about rather than a rule.
  • Tips. Rarely included anywhere.

Merapi jeep tour cost: one morning, four ways to pay

The table compares what two and four travellers pay for a short or medium morning under four pricing styles. The rides are not identical, so read the notes column.

Pricing style Two travellers Four travellers Notes
Local operator jeep, medium (market range) IDR 500,000 to 600,000 IDR 500,000 to 600,000 Same price for either group; check whether pickup and tickets are included
Visit Merapi reference, medium, all-in IDR 600,000 (IDR 300,000 each) IDR 600,000 (IDR 150,000 each) Pickup, insurance, helmets, tickets; reference price to be confirmed
Per person, door to door (tourjogja.com) IDR 1,000,000 IDR 1,520,000 About 5 hours including a 1.5 hour jeep ride, air-conditioned car with hotel pickup
Platform tiered price (Pelago) USD 52.22, about IDR 936,000 USD 69.16, about IDR 1,240,000 90 minute jeep ride with hotel transfers

Per-person offers cost more mostly because they bundle a car and driver for the whole trip, not because the jeep is dearer. The local per-jeep price is the cheapest line, but whether it covers the drive from the city depends on the operator. A couple who want everything arranged pay roughly the same range under a per-person tour as under a platform ticket, while a group of four gains most from a single per-jeep price.

Old prices still rank on Google

When we checked, the top result for this search was an operator’s guide on Discover Your Indonesia, and it quotes IDR 350,000 for a daytime jeep and IDR 450,000 for sunrise. Its own reader comments include a car-rental price marked “valid until Oct 2016”, so those numbers are years out of date. A TripAdvisor answer quoting IDR 300,000 (USD 20) has no visible date and is clearly older too. The current market floor, from five sources we checked on 12 October 2026 (local operator sites, a Telkomsel guide and Headout), is IDR 400,000 to 450,000 for the shortest route.

How much does a Merapi jeep tour cost per person?

For a jeep of four on the medium route, expect about IDR 125,000 to IDR 150,000 per person for the jeep itself, plus the cost of reaching it. For two people, about IDR 250,000 to IDR 300,000 each. A solo traveller pays the full jeep price on a per-jeep offer.

Checklist to compare quotes

  1. Is the price per jeep, per person or per ticket, and for how many people?
  2. Where does it start, at your hotel or at the basecamp in Cangkringan?
  3. Which route, how long, and which stops?
  4. Are tickets, insurance and helmets included?
  5. Is there a wet river crossing, and does the price change without it?
  6. What happens to the booking if weather or volcano activity changes the plan?

Merapi has been at Alert Level III (Siaga) since 5 November 2020, and according to BPPTKG reports quoted by Indonesian media (Suara Garut, Jakarta Globe), that level was kept in early October 2026. Jeep tours stay on the lower slopes, but routes can change or be rescheduled with volcanic activity, so ask any operator about its reschedule and refund rule when you book. More answers are on the Merapi tour FAQ.
