Kali Kuning: The Wet River Crossing on Merapi Jeep Tours
Kali Kuning is the river on Merapi’s southern slope where many jeep routes end with a wet off-road finale. In the Indonesian operator listings it is called the water manoeuvre, and some operators call it the “yellow water trek”. On a jeep Merapi Kali Kuning route, your jeep drives through and along the river, and you should expect to get wet. For many guests it is the most playful part of the tour. For others, especially on a cool dawn, it is the part to skip.
What happens
The jeep leaves the dry track and enters the river bed, where the driver steers through the water and over the stones. Splashes reach the passengers, hence the advice from operators to bring spare clothes. The crossing is short compared with the whole tour. It is optional on some routes and not part of every sunrise option, so ask us whether it is running on your date and whether you can say no.
Kali Kuning is also part of Merapi’s history. Heavy rain in early November 2010 triggered lahars (volcanic mudflows) in rivers including the Kuning, Gendol and Boyong, adding to the damage of the eruption. The river you drive through is one of the channels that carries material down the volcano. Read the story in Mount Merapi 2010 eruption.
Which routes include it
Operator research from October 2026 lists the Kali Kuning crossing on the wet short route, the medium route and the long route. Some sunrise options leave it out.
| Route | Crossing | Reference price per jeep |
|---|---|---|
| Short (wet route) | Yes, on the wet option | IDR 500,000 |
| Classic (medium) | Typically yes | IDR 600,000 |
| Long | Typically yes | IDR 750,000 |
| Sunrise | Not on every option | IDR 700,000 |
Prices are reference prices, per jeep (up to 4 guests), to be confirmed by the operator. The exact route and the crossing are confirmed when you book. See all tours.
What to bring
- A full change of clothes for everyone, plus a small towel.
- A bag or dry sack for your phone, wallet and camera.
- Quick-dry clothes and shoes you do not mind wetting. Sandals can slip on wet stones.
- A plastic bag for the wet clothes afterwards.
When the crossing may not run
River levels and track conditions change with rain. Heavy rain on the upper slope can send water and debris down the river valleys, which is why operators are told to watch the weather. On a wet-season morning the crossing may be shorter, rerouted or cancelled. This is a normal safety decision, not a failure of the tour. We will tell you if the plan changes. Read Mount Merapi visibility and weather for seasonal patterns.
Other stops on the same route
Museum Sisa Hartaku, Alien Rock and Kaliadem Bunker come before the river. On the long route you can also visit Mbah Marijan’s house. For help picking a length, read is a Merapi jeep tour worth it.
Status and safety
Mount Merapi has been at Alert Level III (Siaga) since November 2020. Status checked 12 October 2026; BPPTKG still reported Level III on 7 October. The summit is closed, and danger zones follow the river valleys. Jeep tours stay on the lower slopes and follow the distances set by the authorities. A trip can be changed or postponed if activity or weather requires it. See is Mount Merapi safe to visit.
