If you searched for “Mount Merapi eruption kills 11”, “Mount Merapi West Sumatra” or “Mount Merapi Sumatra”, the volcano in those headlines was Marapi in West Sumatra, not Merapi near Yogyakarta in Java. The mount merapi vs marapi mix-up is common because the names differ by one letter and both mean something like “mountain of fire”. This guide separates the two with sourced figures and the current alert levels, checked on 14 October 2026.

Mount Merapi vs Marapi in the headlines: the December 2023 eruption
On 3 December 2023 Marapi erupted with an ash column of about 3,000 metres. DW reported that 23 hikers died, and Wikipedia gives the same figure, with three injured people rescued. An early report from Yahoo News Australia that week said at least 11 hikers had been found dead, about 75 climbers had been stranded after starting their trek the day before, and locals living on the slopes were barred from within 3 km of the crater. That early story is most likely what searches for “Mount Merapi eruption kills 11” point to (our inference). The toll rose to 23 as the search continued.
None of this happened at Merapi. The victims were hikers on Marapi in Sumatra.
Why the Mount Merapi vs Marapi mix-up happens
- The names. Wikipedia notes that Marapi’s name, like Merapi’s, means “Mountain of Fire”.
- News outlets slip too. DW’s explainer carries an editor’s note saying an earlier version wrongly named Merapi in place of Marapi, and the article now has a section titled “Not to be confused with Mount Merapi”.
- A third Merapi exists. BMKG’s weather page titled “Prakiraan Cuaca Merapi” is for Merapi in Lahat, South Sumatra, not the volcano near Yogyakarta, which we confirmed by opening the page. If you check a forecast for “Merapi”, look for Sleman or Cangkringan in the address.
What is the current alert level for Mount Merapi?
BPBD of the Yogyakarta region says Merapi has been at Level III (Siaga) since 5 November 2020. BPPTKG kept that status in its 8 to 11 October 2026 evaluation, according to Suara Garut, and listed potential hazard distances of 3 km on the Woro river and 5 km on the Gendol river to the southeast, with ejected material able to reach 3 km from the summit. BPBD describes Level III as activity that threatens the area around the eruption centre but not the settlements around the volcano.
Summit climbing remains closed. The Mount Merapi National Park authority said, in a statement reported by Detik, that climbing is closed indefinitely, citing BPPTKG’s report for 19 to 25 June 2026 and asking that the area within 3 km of the summit be cleared of activity. Jeep tours operate on the lower slopes; our alert level explainer, safety guide and hike guide cover the details.
Marapi today: Level II and a 3 km exclusion zone
RRI reported on 20 July 2026 that PVMBG kept Marapi at Level II (Waspada) after its evaluation of 1 to 15 July 2026. Climbers, residents and visitors were asked not to enter the area within 3 km of Verbeek crater, and people living along rivers were told to watch for lahar floods in the rainy season. Wikipedia records that heavy rain on 11 May 2024 triggered lahar flows that killed at least 67 people. We have no first-hand information about visiting Marapi, so this guide does not give advice for climbing it. Follow PVMBG announcements.
Mount Merapi vs Marapi for visitors
Wikipedia calls Marapi popular among hikers, and its 2023 eruption caught climbers on the mountain. At Merapi the picture for visitors is different: the summit is closed, and the visitor option near Yogyakarta is a jeep ride on the lower slopes. TLCM at Kaliadem lists regular tours between 07:00 and 18:00 and sunrise departures at 04:30, and its short route runs about 1.5 hours. In the mount merapi vs marapi comparison, then, Merapi is the one with a tourist route near a major city, and Marapi is the one whose current rule is simply to stay out of the 3 km zone.
How many people has Merapi killed?
No source we read gives a single total for Merapi’s whole history, so we list the events they name:
- 2010: 353 people were killed over about a month and 350,000 fled their homes, per Wikipedia.
- 1930: pyroclastic flows killed 1,400 people and destroyed 13 villages, per Wikipedia.
- 1994: Wikipedia gives 27 deaths and Oregon State University’s Volcano World gives 43, so the sources disagree.
Avoiding mix-ups when you plan a trip
- Search with the region. “Merapi Sleman” or “Marapi West Sumatra”.
- Check the date. The Marapi hiker deaths date from December 2023, and old headlines resurface.
- Look for place names. Sleman, Cangkringan, Kaliurang or Yogyakarta mean Merapi. Padang, Bukittinggi or West Sumatra mean Marapi.
- Use the right agency. BPPTKG reports on Merapi, and PVMBG’s evaluation covers Marapi.
- Ask your operator which volcano a news item refers to.
Planning a Yogyakarta trip
For anyone weighing mount merapi vs marapi before a Yogyakarta trip, Marapi is on another island and does not affect your plans. Merapi’s status does, so check it before you go. One operator on the lower slopes, TLCM at Kaliadem, quotes foreign visitors IDR 500,000 per jeep for its short route and IDR 700,000 for its long one, and our Merapi jeep tours, the sunrise jeep tour and the private Merapi jeep tour show the routes. For road times, see how far Mount Merapi is from Yogyakarta. If a headline worries you, send it through our contact page and we will tell you which volcano it concerns.
