Is Mount Merapi safe to visit?
Merapi is an active volcano at Alert Level III (Siaga) since November 2020, checked 12 October 2026. The summit is closed and a restricted zone of about 3 km applies. What does Level III mean?

Where can I check the live status?
BPPTKG (the Yogyakarta volcano monitoring centre) and MAGMA Indonesia publish updates, in Indonesian. Local news such as Radar Jogja summarises the weekly report.

Is this the volcano in the news for deadly eruptions?

What happens if activity or weather gets worse?
Routes can be changed or the tour postponed. Ask for the reschedule and refund policy when you book; the details are to be confirmed by the operator.

Hiking

Can I hike Mount Merapi?
No. Summit climbing is officially prohibited, with a restricted zone of about 3 km. Official hiking access closed in May 2018. See the hike guide.

What is the alternative to hiking?
A jeep tour on the lower southern slope, which is the usual way to see the volcano and the 2010 eruption sites.

How much does a Merapi jeep tour cost?
Priced per jeep, up to 4 guests. Our reference prices: short IDR 500,000 (about USD 28), classic IDR 600,000 (about USD 34), long IDR 750,000 (about USD 42) and sunrise IDR 700,000 (about USD 39). Is the price per person or per jeep?
Per jeep. Marketplaces often show a per-person price, which can look cheap for four people and expensive for two.

What is usually extra?

How far is Merapi from Yogyakarta?

What will I see?
The 2010 eruption sites: Museum Sisa Hartaku, Alien Rock, Kaliadem Bunker, and on some routes the Kali Kuning river crossing and Mbah Marijan’s house.

Will I get wet?
On routes with the river crossing, yes. Bring spare clothes.

What should I wear?
Closed shoes, clothes that can get dusty or wet and a light jacket for early starts.

Is there a night tour or a sunset tour?

Weather and views

Will I see the volcano?
