Borobudur Sunrise Ticket Price: IDR 1,000,000 for Foreigners

  • October 19, 2026

The Borobudur sunrise ticket price for a foreign visitor is about IDR 1,000,000 for the official sunrise on the temple itself, based on an operator page dated 30 April 2026 and two other guides that quote the same figure. The cheaper “Borobudur sunrise” that most tours sell is a different thing: the view from Punthuk Setumbu hill, reported at about IDR 50,000. This guide separates the two, shows what the 1,000,000 ticket includes, and lists the rules that catch people out. Prices were checked on 14 October 2026 and can change, so treat them as reference figures.

Borobudur sunrise ticket price at a glance

Option Where you watch Foreign adult price (reference) Source type
Official temple sunrise, 04:00 On the monument, up to the 9th level About IDR 1,000,000 Three pages agree
Setumbu Hill sunrise A hill outside the temple About IDR 50,000 One tour operator
Regular daytime climb ticket On the monument, in a timed slot IDR 455,000 for an adult InJourney article and two guides

The Borobudur sunrise ticket price differs by a factor of 20 between the temple and the hill (1,000,000 against 50,000, both reported figures). Two adults on the temple sunrise would pay about IDR 2,000,000 in tickets (2 x 1,000,000), before transport from Yogyakarta. The official ticket site, ticket.injourneydestination.id, lists the sunrise ticket as limited to 100 people per day, with breakfast and a souvenir included.

How much does a Borobudur sunrise ticket cost on the temple?

The operator page for the exclusive sunrise ticket gives one foreign price for adults and for children aged 3 and over: IDR 1,000,000. Children aged 0 to 2 are free. A guide site that tracks the official products quotes the same IDR 1,000,000 for international visitors, and a tour operator’s blog says the same, adding that you must reserve on the official ticketing website and choose the 4 am ticket.

Domestic visitors and KITAS holders see a lower price on that page, and a 2026 early-season deal for them only. The foreign price is not discounted in that deal, so do not expect the promo to apply to you.

What the ticket includes

According to the operator page, the price includes:

  • a sunrise access wristband
  • a flashlight
  • Upanat, the special temple sandals
  • a licensed local guide, English-speaking for foreign visitors
  • breakfast at the Manohara restaurant

Return transfers are not included. The guide is shared: one guide accompanies a maximum of 15 people.

The rules to know before you pay

The same page lists conditions that matter as much as the Borobudur sunrise ticket price:

  1. Tickets are valid only for the date you choose and are non-refundable, even in rain or cloud.
  2. You must buy at least 2 days before the visit, by 24:00 WIB.
  3. A purchase must be accompanied by ID. The page names KTP or KITAS, so ask what a foreign visitor should present.
  4. Arrive 30 to 45 minutes before the 04:00 session. Late arrivals may be given limited access.
  5. DSLR cameras with kit or standard lenses are allowed. Professional telephoto lenses and tripods need prior authorisation.
  6. You may bring drinking water but no food onto the temple.

Because the ticket is non-refundable, the weather is the main risk you carry. For how often Merapi and the horizon are clear at dawn, see Mount Merapi visibility and weather.

How the sunrise morning runs

The operator page gives this schedule for the temple sunrise (all times WIB):

Time What happens
04:00 to 04:30 Registration at the Manohara Borobudur Cultural Center (Gate 7): wristband, Upanat, flashlight, grouping
04:30 to 05:00 Transfer to the monument, up to the 9th level
05:00 to 07:00 Sunrise on top of the temple
07:00 to 08:00 Breakfast at the Cultural Center

So the programme takes about four hours from the 04:00 session start. One travel guide puts the drive from Yogyakarta at roughly 1 to 1.5 hours by private vehicle. If you arrive 45 minutes early, around 03:15, the drive means leaving Yogyakarta between about 01:45 and 02:15. That is our own arithmetic from those two figures, not a published pickup time.

The Setumbu Hill alternative

Most tours that advertise a “Borobudur sunrise” take you to Punthuk Setumbu, a hill about 2.5 km from the temple, according to one guide. You watch the sun rise towards the temple from a viewpoint rather than from the stone terraces. One local operator states the Setumbu entrance ticket is “only IDR 50,000” and builds its sample itinerary around a 04:30 to 06:30 sunrise there. A Tripadvisor snippet shows lower, undated figures (IDR 30,000), so confirm the current fee with your operator.

At Setumbu the Borobudur sunrise ticket price is a small fraction of the temple’s, because you are paying for a viewpoint, not for the monument. Setumbu is not part of the Borobudur ticket. If you want to go inside the temple afterwards, you still need a regular ticket. Our destination notes describe Setumbu as a viewpoint over Borobudur with Merapi behind it, weather permitting, which is why it appeals to people planning a volcano day. The combination is described on our Borobudur sunrise and Merapi lava tour page.

Regular daytime ticket prices

If sunrise is not essential, the ordinary ticket sits far below the Borobudur sunrise ticket price. The InJourney article for 2026 lists these climb prices:

Visitor Adult Child
Foreign visitor, temple structure (climb) IDR 455,000 IDR 305,000
Domestic visitor, temple structure (climb) IDR 150,000 IDR 100,000

The climb ticket includes the Upanat sandals, a guide and access to the upper stupa level, and the daily quota is limited. The same article lists grounds-only (pelataran) prices for domestic visitors only. Sources disagree on whether foreigners can buy a grounds ticket: one guide quotes IDR 375,000, another says it is not sold to foreigners at all. The official booking flow decides, so check it for your date.

Opening hours also differ between sources. InJourney gives the grounds as 07:00 to 17:00, with ticket counters from 06:30 and the climb following timed sessions. It adds that on Mondays visitors can usually only enter the grounds, without climbing.

Other sunrise products on the official site

The official ticket page lists more than the standard sunrise. Besides the Borobudur Sunrise (100 people a day, breakfast and a souvenir), it offers a Borobudur Sunset (dinner and a souvenir, also 100 people a day), a Picnic Breakfast Dagi Abhinaya, which is a sunrise picnic from Dagi Hill with Javanese music, and a Manohara Premium entrance with VIP access and a private guide. We did not find prices for the last two, so we do not quote any.

Buying direct or through a tour

A guide site reports that resellers sell temple-sunrise packages at US$95 to US$136 for comparable access before transport, against the official ticket. Part of that gap is the car, the driver and the service, so compare like with like. When you compare a tour quote with the Borobudur sunrise ticket price, ask:

  1. Is it the temple sunrise or Setumbu Hill?
  2. Is the Borobudur ticket included, and who buys it in whose name?
  3. Is breakfast included?
  4. Is the price per person or per car?

For a hotel pickup and a morning built around either option, see our Borobudur sunrise tour page. If you want to add a volcano ride the same morning, Merapi jeep tour cost explains how jeep pricing works, and the full-day version is the Borobudur, Merapi and Prambanan day tour.

Which sunrise should you buy?

  • You want to stand on the monument at dawn: the official temple sunrise at about IDR 1,000,000. Book at least 2 days ahead and accept that it is non-refundable.
  • You want a sunrise photo and a lower price: Setumbu Hill, then a regular climb ticket later if you want to go inside.
  • You mainly want to see the temple: skip sunrise and take a daytime climb ticket at IDR 455,000 for an adult.

Check the Borobudur sunrise ticket price on the official site for your date before you commit, and ask us about pickup times through the contact page.
