Borobudur Day Trip From Yogyakarta: Timing, Tickets, Add-Ons

  • October 23, 2026

A Borobudur day trip from Yogyakarta takes about 1 to 1.5 hours each way by car, and the temple climb itself runs in timed slots that start at 08:30. That makes a half day of about 4.5 hours possible, while adding Prambanan or a Merapi jeep ride stretches the day to 8 to 11 hours, depending on the operator. This guide covers how to get there, how the ticket slots shape your timing, and which add-ons fit. Prices and hours were checked on 14 October 2026 and should be confirmed before you book.

Borobudur day trip from Yogyakarta: three ways to plan it

Plan Typical length What it covers Source
Borobudur half day About 4.5 hours Pickup 08:00, Borobudur 09:00 to 11:30 with the climb, back by 12:30 Private tour listing
Borobudur and Prambanan 8 to 10 hours Two temples, hotel pickup Klook and GetYourGuide listings (search snippets)
Borobudur, Merapi jeep and Prambanan 9 to 11 hours Temples plus a volcano ride Trip.com listing, operator schedules

The half-day plan is the lightest Borobudur day trip from Yogyakarta and fits around a morning or afternoon in the city. The longer plans make sense if you have only one day in the area and want more than one stop.

How do I get to Borobudur from Yogyakarta?

Borobudur is about 40 to 45 km from Yogyakarta, in Magelang, Central Java. Bobobox’s transport guide lists these options:

Option Time Cost (reference)
Private car or tour vehicle 1 to 1.5 hours Depends on the operator
Ride-hailing (Gojek or Grab) 1 to 1.5 hours IDR 150,000 to 250,000 one way
DAMRI bus from the airport or station About 1.5 hours IDR 50,000 to 75,000
Trans Jogja to Jombor or Giwangan, then a bus to Borobudur Terminal About 2 hours IDR 20,000 to 30,000

Another guide puts the drive at about an hour and a half and warns that public transport is slow and complicated. If you go independently, a ride-hailing round trip of IDR 300,000 to 500,000 plus a foreign climb ticket of IDR 455,000 comes to roughly IDR 755,000 to 955,000 for one traveller before food (our arithmetic from those figures).

Tickets and slots decide your timing

The climb is not open-ended, and that shapes any Borobudur day trip from Yogyakarta. The InJourney article for 2026 lists the foreign climb ticket at IDR 455,000 for an adult and IDR 305,000 for a child, including the Upanat sandals, a guide and access to the upper stupa level. Access to the structure follows timed sessions, and the daily quota is limited. Two travel guides give the session window as 08:30 to 15:30, with a group and guide spending about an hour on the monument. A visit typically takes about 2 hours in total, according to one of them.

What that means for your plan:

  • To catch the first slot at 08:30, leave Yogyakarta around 07:00 (07:00 plus 1 to 1.5 hours is 08:00 to 08:30). That is our arithmetic.
  • Your ticket is valid only for the session you book, and late arrivals may be refused, according to one guide. Build in a buffer.
  • One guide suggests the first slot or the last one at 15:30, when the light is softer and it is not so hot.
  • Monday is different. InJourney says visitors can usually enter only the grounds on Mondays, without climbing, and one guide says Prambanan’s main temple is also closed on Mondays. Check the official ticket site, ticket.injourneydestination.id, for your date.

Borobudur half day tour from Yogyakarta

The shortest Borobudur day trip from Yogyakarta is the half day. One private operator’s half-day listing runs: pickup at 08:00 to 09:00, Borobudur from 09:00 to 11:30 with a ticket to climb, and the return to your hotel from 11:30 to 12:30. Pickup times are flexible between 07:00 and 14:00. An optional stop at Mendut and Pawon temples can be added. The listing shows private prices per person of IDR 1,150,000 for a solo traveller, IDR 825,000 each for two, IDR 750,000 each for three and IDR 700,000 each for four or more (reference, from one operator). Every operator prices differently, so ask what is included.

Adding Prambanan or Merapi

Prambanan. One guide puts Prambanan about 45 km from Borobudur and about an hour and a half apart by road in heavy traffic. A day tour that covers both temples plus Yogyakarta’s Keraton, Taman Sari and a wayang workshop is also listed by one operator. Because Prambanan’s own days and hours can differ from Borobudur’s, check them separately.

Merapi jeep. Operator schedules for Borobudur, a Merapi jeep and Prambanan together run from about 9.5 to 11 hours. One sample has Borobudur first and the jeep ride from 13:00, ending the day at Prambanan around 15:00 to 15:30 until sunset. Another starts at Prambanan, has the jeep at 11:30 and reaches Borobudur around 15:30. The road from the Merapi area to Borobudur takes about an hour in the second schedule. Our Borobudur, Merapi and Prambanan day tour page describes the private version, and the sunrise and lava tour is the half-day combination.

Before adding Merapi, check the volcano’s status in our guide to the Mount Merapi alert level. For driving times from the city, see how far Mount Merapi is from Yogyakarta.

How much time do you need at Borobudur?

Plan about 2 hours at the temple for the climb session and the grounds. With a one-hour drive each way that is about 4 hours, and the half-day listing above allows 4.5. A Borobudur day trip from Yogyakarta that runs longer is usually carrying add-ons.

Practical tips

  • Wear modest clothing. Borobudur’s rules also ban climbing the stupas and sitting on the reliefs, and food is not allowed on the structure.
  • Book the climb ticket on the official site as early as your dates allow. One guide says tickets can be booked only about seven days ahead, so check the window.
  • Keep the day simple. For a Borobudur day trip from Yogyakarta, Borobudur plus one more stop is enough for most people.
  • Ask any operator what is included: the ticket, the guide, lunch and the return transfer.
