Prambanan Tour From Yogyakarta: Costs, Timing and Options

  • November 2, 2026

A Prambanan tour from Yogyakarta can mean three different things: going on your own by Trans Jogja bus or train, hiring a private car with a driver for a half day, or adding Prambanan to a longer day with Borobudur or a Merapi jeep ride. The temple complex is about 17 km from the city centre. InJourney, which runs the site, lists around IDR 400,000 for a foreign adult ticket, and one private half-day listing starts at IDR 600,000 per person for groups of four or more, ticket included. This guide compares the options with sample costs, then covers hours, Mondays and timing.

Prambanan tour from Yogyakarta: ways to go and what each costs

The figures below are reference prices from 2026 guides and one undated operator listing, and each needs a check before you book.

Option What it involves Reference cost
Trans Jogja bus 1A About 55 to 60 minutes from the Malioboro stops to the Prambanan terminus, roughly every 12 minutes, 05:30 to 20:30 IDR 3,500 cash or IDR 2,700 cashless one way
KRL train Yogyakarta to Brambanan station, 28 to 39 minutes, then a short ojek ride or walk IDR 8,000 per trip
Ride-hailing car About 17 km, 45 minutes to 1.5 hours by car depending on traffic About IDR 100,000 each way
Private half-day tour Hotel pick-up, car, driver, water and parking, and the entrance ticket IDR 600,000 to 1,050,000 per person
Longer day tour Prambanan with Borobudur or a Merapi jeep ride On request, see below

The bus times and train details come from InJourney’s guide to the route from Malioboro. The bus fares are the 2026 flat fares reported by Harian Jogja on 13 October 2026; Travel Lush’s April 2026 guide still lists IDR 4,000. The ride-hailing price comes from Travel Lush, and fares can change.

The private tour comes from a Mount Merapi Tour listing. Its itinerary is an 08:00 pick-up, a visit from 09:00 to 11:30 and a return to the hotel around 12:30, so about 4.5 hours in total. Prices are per person and depend on group size, so treat them as a reference:

Group Price per person Total
1 traveller IDR 1,050,000 IDR 1,050,000
2 travellers IDR 725,000 IDR 1,450,000
3 travellers IDR 650,000 IDR 1,950,000
4 or more IDR 600,000 IDR 2,400,000 for four

A worked estimate for one foreign adult shows what you pay for convenience. Doing it yourself by bus costs about IDR 407,000 (ticket IDR 400,000 plus two cash fares of IDR 3,500). By ride-hailing it costs about IDR 600,000 (ticket plus two rides at IDR 100,000). The solo private tour at IDR 1,050,000 is therefore about IDR 450,000 above the ride-hailing route and IDR 643,000 above the bus.

Two limits apply to that comparison. The bus figure leaves out the last stretch from the terminal to the gate, which Travel Lush describes as a walk of about 15 minutes and InJourney as an online-transport ride. And the private listing says an entrance ticket is included but not which rate, so the comparison assumes the foreign adult rate. The listing’s per-person price falls from IDR 1,050,000 for one traveller to IDR 600,000 for four, so a private tour is cheapest per head in a group.

What a Prambanan ticket costs and covers

The InJourney Destination page lists a reference of IDR 400,000 for a foreign adult and IDR 250,000 for a foreign child, on weekdays and weekends alike, and Travel Lush and an operator guide at Borobudursunrise.com give the same two figures. Indonesian visitors pay IDR 50,000 on weekdays and IDR 65,000 on weekends. The ticket is the fixed part of any Prambanan tour from Yogyakarta, whichever way you travel. Check the official online ticket page before you go.

The Borobudursunrise.com guide says a standard ticket generally also covers Sewu Temple, Lumbung and Bubrah temples and the Prambanan Museum. The Mount Merapi Tour listing mentions the same three temples next to the main complex. Travel Lush advises buying online because daily visitor numbers are capped, and says foreigners use a separate ticket booth inside the building, where the line is usually shorter.

Registered guides wait near the entrance. The Borobudursunrise.com guide puts a one-hour guided walk of the main complex at IDR 150,000 to 250,000, with Sewu Temple costing IDR 50,000 to 100,000 more. That is an operator’s estimate, so ask for the price before the walk starts.

Opening hours and the Monday question

InJourney Destination, which manages the site, lists the ticket counter as open from 06:30 to 17:00 and the temple area from 07:00 to 17:30. Borobudursunrise.com adds that the last entry is 16:30, and Travel Lush gives 06:30 to 17:00 for the whole site. Plan to be inside well before 17:30.

Monday needs care. InJourney Destination says that on Mondays the main temples (Brahma, Shiva and Vishnu) are closed for routine maintenance and cleaning. Visitors can still enter the middle courtyard and the nearby Sewu, Lumbung and Bubrah temples. The InJourney ticket guide says the main zone is usually closed on Mondays, Borobudursunrise.com says the inner courtyard with the three main towers is closed every Monday, Come2Indonesia, a tour operator, says Prambanan is closed on Mondays, and Travel Lush lists the complex as open seven days a week without mentioning the closure. Plan any Prambanan tour from Yogyakarta for Tuesday to Sunday if the main towers matter to you.

Best time for a Prambanan tour from Yogyakarta

An early start suits a Prambanan tour from Yogyakarta because the Borobudursunrise.com guide says tour buses from the city typically do not arrive until about 09:00. The same guide calls the late-afternoon sunset window the most popular, especially at weekends, and advises avoiding 10:00 to 14:00 because of heat, harsh light and peak crowds. InJourney Destination suggests arriving from about 15:00 if you want the sunset, which fits the 16:30 last entry and the 17:30 closing time.

The evening Ramayana Ballet is a separate ticket. The BorobudurSunrise.net agency’s 2026 schedule lists performances on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays from 19:30 to 21:00, open-air from May to October and in the indoor Trimurti Hall in January to April and November to December. Reference prices start from IDR 165,000 for Class 2, then IDR 220,000 on weekdays or IDR 275,000 at weekends and holidays for Class 1, and IDR 385,000 or IDR 440,000 for Special seats. Open-air VIP seats are IDR 495,000 on weekdays and IDR 550,000 at weekends.

Schedules change, so check again before booking. InJourney’s own ticket page lists the Ramayana indoor show on the same three evenings, plus a Friday evening show called Roro Jonggrang and, from January to April, a Saturday Ramayana show at 17:30 in the outdoor amphitheatre. Pairing the Ramayana evening show with the temple works on Tuesday, Thursday or Saturday.

Combining Prambanan with Borobudur or Merapi

Borobudursunrise.com says there is no direct public transport between Borobudur and Prambanan, so a private car is the practical choice, and sources put the temples between roughly 40 and 53 km apart. Read the Borobudur day trip from Yogyakarta and the Borobudur sunrise ticket price guides before you choose a sunrise.

If you also want the volcano, our Borobudur, Merapi and Prambanan day tour is a private day of about 12 hours: Borobudur at sunrise, an open 4×4 ride on Merapi’s lower slope, then Prambanan in the afternoon. The price is on request, because temple ticket inclusion is still to be confirmed. The shorter Borobudur sunrise and Merapi lava tour leaves Prambanan out. For the jeep alone, see Merapi jeep tour cost.

Merapi has been at Alert Level III (Siaga) since November 2020, according to Yogyakarta’s disaster agency BPBD, and the national park authority said in June 2026, as reported by detik, that climbing remains closed. Jeep tours stay on the lower slopes. Check the status and read is Mount Merapi safe to visit.

A Prambanan tour from Yogyakarta that adds Borobudur or Merapi makes for a long day, and Prambanan still belongs on a Tuesday to Sunday. Our 3-day Yogyakarta itinerary and day trips from Yogyakarta show where it fits.

What to see and what to wear

Travel Lush describes a cluster of Hindu temples built around 850 CE, with a main temple over 150 feet (about 46 m) tall and detailed reliefs. For a Prambanan tour from Yogyakarta of a couple of hours, one tip helps: the Borobudursunrise.com guide says the Ramayana reliefs are meant to be read clockwise from the east entrance of the Shiva temple, and suggests two to three hours for the whole complex, or 1.5 to 2 hours for the main temples alone.

Cover your knees and shoulders, Travel Lush advises. Shorts are fine, because a sarong is provided at the entrance, and an umbrella helps against both sun and rain. To arrange a Prambanan tour from Yogyakarta that includes the volcano, send your dates and hotel area through the contact page or see all routes on the tour packages page.
