Day Trip From Yogyakarta: Times, Distances and Pairings

  • October 26, 2026

The right day trip from Yogyakarta depends on how much road time you will accept. Prambanan is about 45 minutes away, Borobudur one to one and a half hours, Goa Jomblang about 90 minutes and Dieng nearly four hours each way. This guide gives those times with their sources, then shows which trips can share a single day, using arithmetic you can check. Everything was checked on 14 October 2026, and traffic changes every figure.

Day trip from Yogyakarta at a glance

Trip Travel time from the city (source) Allow (our estimate unless a source is named)
Prambanan About 45 minutes by road (Snoezels on the Road) 2 to 3 hours
Borobudur 1 to 1.5 hours by private vehicle (Bobobox); about 1.5 hours (Snoezels) Climb slot of about 1 hour, plus the grounds
Merapi jeep Summit about 28 km north (Wikipedia); one tour listing quotes about 5 hours door to door with a 1.5-hour jeep ride 1.5 to 2.5 hours in the jeep
Goa Jomblang About 90 minutes (Discover Your Indonesia) Arrive by 09:45
Gunungkidul beaches 1.5 to 2 hours (Backindo) A half day
Parangtritis About 28 km (Indonesian tourism board) A sunset or half day
Dieng Plateau Nearly 4 hours each way (Erika’s Travels) A full day, ideally two
Solo About 1 hour 10 minutes by commuter train from Solo Balapan (Trip.com) A full day

Monday matters for the temples. Snoezels says the Borobudur climb and the main Prambanan temple are closed on Mondays, and the two combined tours we read both state that temples close every Monday.

Borobudur day trip from Yogyakarta

Borobudur is the classic day trip from Yogyakarta. Bobobox lists the options: a private vehicle in 1 to 1.5 hours, ride-hailing at IDR 150,000 to 250,000 one way, a DAMRI bus in about 1.5 hours for IDR 50,000 to 75,000, or Trans Jogja plus a bus in about 2 hours for IDR 20,000 to 30,000. The climb itself is a guided slot of about one hour between 08:30 and 15:30, and tickets can be booked only seven days ahead. Our Borobudur day trip guide has the ticket and slot detail.

Prambanan is the easy partner. It is about 45 minutes from the city by road, and Trip.com’s guide names Brambanan as the nearest station on the commuter line, 15 to 20 minutes from Yogyakarta, with a flat fare of IDR 8,000. Backindo and Backpackmoments both advise against doing Borobudur and Prambanan on the same day if you can avoid it.

Merapi day trip from Yogyakarta

A jeep tour covers Merapi’s southern slope in a short block of time. At TLCM’s Kaliadem basecamp the routes run from about 1.5 hours to about 2.5 hours, operating hours are 07:00 to 18:00 and sunrise departures leave at 04:30. Foreign visitors pay IDR 500,000 for the short route and IDR 700,000 for the long one per jeep, and local operators we sampled charge IDR 400,000 to 750,000 per jeep (our price file, October 2026). See how far Mount Merapi is from Yogyakarta for the road, and Merapi jeep tour cost for the price detail.

Merapi has been at Level III (Siaga) since 5 November 2020 according to the provincial disaster agency, and jeeps stay on the lower slopes; the safety guide explains what that means.

Goa Jomblang and the beaches near Yogyakarta

Goa Jomblang is a sinkhole cave entered by rope. Discover Your Indonesia advises leaving the city at about 07:00 so you arrive by 09:45, and Backpackmoments says the descent happens just before noon. It reports that public transport is tricky and the cave needs a booking, so a tour or a car is the practical way.

For beaches, Backindo puts the Gunungkidul coast 1.5 to 2 hours away and recommends leaving at 06:00 or 07:00, because the sea rises around 14:00 and swimming needs care. Parangtritis is closer at about 28 km, but Heyexplorer says swimming there is not recommended because of hazardous currents. Backpackmoments describes one tour that packs Merapi, Jomblang and Timang Beach into a single day. We found no timetable for it, so we would treat it as a very long day.

Rain changes these plans. Backpackmoments says Merapi, Timang and Jomblang become harder to visit when it rains.

Dieng Plateau day trip from Yogyakarta

Erika’s Travels called Dieng a day trip from Yogyakarta that took nearly four hours of driving each way, and suggests at least two days there. Day tours from Yogyakarta ran between about US$30 and US$70 per person in that account, and a private driver cost about US$40 per person. Arithmetic: two legs of nearly four hours is close to eight hours in a vehicle before you step out, so we would not combine Dieng with anything else.

Day trip to Solo from Yogyakarta by train

Solo is the easiest trip here to do without a driver. Trip.com’s guide lists the commuter line from Yogyakarta to Palur at a flat IDR 8,000 per trip, about 1 hour 10 minutes from Solo Balapan to Yogyakarta, with 11 to 13 trips a day in each direction. Tugu station is a 5 to 10 minute walk from Malioboro. We did not find an up-to-date list of what to see in Solo in the sources we read, so this guide stops at the transport.

Which day trips fit into one day?

The table uses the sourced times above plus our own addition, so check it against your hotel location.

Pairing Fits? Why
Borobudur plus Prambanan Yes, about 8 to 9 hours 07:00 start, 1.5 hours to Borobudur, 1 hour on the monument plus an hour on the grounds (our assumption), 1.5 hours to Prambanan, 2 to 3 hours there, 45 minutes home (our arithmetic)
Borobudur, Merapi jeep and Prambanan Yes, 9.5 to 11 hours Operator schedules run 08:00 to 17:30 and 07:00 to 18:00, with a jeep ride of about 2 hours
Sunrise jeep plus the Keraton Yes, on Tuesday to Sunday 04:30 start plus a 2.5-hour sunrise route is 07:00; the Keraton can close as early as 11:00 on Fridays per Cestee; if the transfer takes about 1.75 hours (our estimate from the 5-hour door-to-door listing) you are back by about 08:45
Dieng plus anything No Nearly 8 hours of driving alone
Jomblang plus a beach One tour exists Backpackmoments reports it, but no timetable was found

The two combined tours quote their prices per PAX, as written on the pages: IDR 1,629K to 2,841K for the first, which starts at 07:00, and IDR 1,364K to 2,511K for the second, which starts at 08:00, depending on group size. Both include admission. The pages label the prices “per PAX”, and we did not confirm whether that means per person.
