The Yogyakarta itinerary 3 days long below follows opening hours instead of a wish list. It puts the royal city on day 1, the two big temples on day 2 and a Merapi jeep tour on day 3. It then shows how to reshuffle the days if one of them is a Monday, when the Borobudur climb and the main temple at Prambanan are closed. Prices and hours were checked on 14 October 2026 and can change.
Yogyakarta itinerary 3 days at a glance

| 3: volcano | Merapi jeep tour | Rest, or Kota Gede | Wayang or street food |
Which sites close on Monday?
Monday is the day that breaks most plans like this one. The sources do not fully agree, so the table shows who says what.
| Site | Monday | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Borobudur climb | Closed for maintenance, the grounds stay open | Snoezels on the Road, InJourney |
| Prambanan | Main temple closed, other temples open | Snoezels on the Road |
| Keraton | Closed per two guides, open daily per a third | Cestee, Backindo, Time Travel Turtle |
| Taman Sari | Closed per one guide, daily 09:00 to 15:00 per another | Backindo, Museum of Wander |
| Museum Sonobudoyo | Closed | Backindo |
| Merapi jeep | The operator page we read lists 07:00 to 18:00 and names no closed day | merapiadventure.com |
The practical rule: the operator pages we read list daily hours with no Monday closure, so the Merapi jeep is the best fit for a Monday (confirm with your operator); keep the city and the temples for Tuesday to Sunday. If your day 1 is a Monday, do Merapi first, the city on Tuesday and the temples on Wednesday. If day 2 is a Monday, swap days 2 and 3. If day 3 is a Monday, the standard order below already works. Friday needs one more note: the Keraton closes as early as 11:00 on Fridays according to two guides, so go straight there.
Yogyakarta itinerary 3 days, day 1: the royal city and Malioboro
Arrive at the Keraton, the Sultan’s palace, by 09:00. Guides disagree on closing times. Cestee lists 14:00 from Tuesday to Thursday, 11:00 on Friday and 17:00 at weekends, while Time Travel Turtle gives 12:30 daily and 11:00 on Fridays and Saturdays. Entry for foreign visitors is IDR 25,000 per entrance according to Cestee, and Backindo suggests 1 to 2 hours inside, with performances in the morning.
From the Keraton, Taman Sari, the former royal bathing complex, is about 13 minutes on foot or 9 by becak, according to Backindo, which lists entry at about IDR 25,000. Museum of Wander gives daily hours of 09:00 to 15:00. Allow time for the underground mosque and the narrow lanes around it, which Backpackmoments singles out.
After lunch, pick one indoor stop. The Vredeburg fort-museum lists foreign tickets at IDR 100,000 on its official page, and Sonobudoyo is a cheaper option, with IDR 20,000 for international visitors according to Backindo. Pasar Beringharjo is the market choice, which Backpackmoments recommends for batik.
In the evening, walk Malioboro, which The Travel Author measures at 2.5 km of stalls and shops. Then head to Alun-Alun Kidul, the southern square. Backpackmoments describes neon pedal minibuses and more than 100 food stalls there after dark. If you want a show, Backindo lists wayang performances at Sonobudoyo at 20:00, with tickets from IDR 50,000 to 100,000.
Yogyakarta itinerary 3 days, day 2: Borobudur and Prambanan
This part of the Yogyakarta itinerary 3 days is the long day, and two guides advise against doing both temples together. Backindo calls it extremely tiring, and Backpackmoments says it prefers separate days. With only 3 days, the compromise is a driver and a firm schedule.
Borobudur first. Snoezels on the Road puts Borobudur about an hour and a half from Yogyakarta, and the climb runs Tuesday to Sunday in guided slots between 08:30 and 15:30. A group spends about one hour on the monument. The foreign ticket for the structure is IDR 455,000 according to InJourney. Tickets can be booked only seven days ahead, and the earliest slot, 08:30, is one of the first to sell out. Leave the city at 07:00 to reach it. More detail is in our Borobudur day trip guide.
Prambanan in the afternoon. The two temples are about 45 km apart and roughly 1.5 hours by road in heavy traffic, so after a late lunch you arrive around 13:00 to 14:00 (our arithmetic: leave Borobudur about 10:30 to 11:00, add 1.5 hours). Prambanan is open from 06:30 to 17:30, with last entry at 17:00. A ticket is about IDR 400,000, and Snoezels recommends at least two to three hours.
Optional evening. The official Ramayana Ballet schedule lists open-air shows on Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday from 19:30 to 21:00 for May to October 2026. Check the schedule for your dates, because the official table lists a different venue from November to April.
Entry fees on this Yogyakarta itinerary 3 days for one foreign adult across days 1 and 2 add up to IDR 25,000 + 25,000 + 455,000 + 400,000 = IDR 905,000, before the driver, food and guides. That sum assumes the Borobudur structure ticket and no museum.
Yogyakarta itinerary 3 days, day 3: Merapi jeep tour
The last day of the Yogyakarta itinerary 3 days is the adventure day. An open 4×4 follows the lava-flow tracks on Merapi’s southern slope, with stops such as the Kaliadem bunker, Alien Rock and the Sisa Hartaku mini museum. One operator, TLCM at Kaliadem, lists the museum, Alien Rock and the bunker as included in the jeep price.
- Start time. That page says the best time for photos with Merapi behind you is before 08:00, before cloud covers the summit. At that operator, sunrise jeeps leave at 04:30 and regular tours run from 07:00 to 18:00. Our sunrise jeep tour page covers the early option.
- Cost. A sample of local operators charges IDR 400,000 to 750,000 per jeep for up to four people, depending on the route (our price file, October 2026). TLCM quotes foreign visitors IDR 500,000 for the short route and IDR 700,000 for the long one. See Merapi jeep tour cost for a breakdown.
- Distance. Merapi’s summit is about 28 km north of the city according to Wikipedia, and how far Mount Merapi is from Yogyakarta covers the road.
- Status. Merapi has been at Level III (Siaga) since 5 November 2020 according to the Yogyakarta provincial disaster agency (BPBD), and BPPTKG kept that status in its 8 to 11 October 2026 evaluation. Jeeps stay on the lower slopes. Read is Mount Merapi safe to visit before you book.
Afternoon: rest, or visit Kota Gede, where Backindo says you can try silver-crafting. In the evening, a wayang show or street food closes the trip. You can compare all our routes on the Merapi jeep tour page.
Is 3 days enough for Yogyakarta?
For a Yogyakarta itinerary 3 days long, the guides are split. Backpackmoments says three days covers the highlights, including the Keraton, Taman Sari, Borobudur, Prambanan and one adventure activity, but also says it is not enough to see Yogyakarta properly. Backindo calls three days enough for several attractions and says five days or a week would be perfect.
More days: Yogyakarta itinerary 4 days, 5 days and 7 days
- 4 days. Add a slow day for Kota Gede, a batik or silver workshop or a gamelan lesson, all hands-on activities Backindo lists.
- 5 days. Add a beach day. Backindo puts the Gunungkidul coast 1.5 to 2 hours away and advises leaving at 06:00 or 07:00 because the sea rises around 14:00. Goa Jomblang is a 90-minute drive per Discover Your Indonesia and needs an early start to arrive by 09:45.
- 7 days. Keep a spare day for weather and add Dieng. Erika’s Travels reports nearly four hours of driving each way and suggests at least two days there, so it does not fit a rushed trip.
